My Memories of Susan.
By Robyn Johnson
We first met at Secondary school in Essendon. Local primary schools and country schools had quotas for students to go to Essendon High School. Susan came from Essendon and I came from Strathmore. We all mixed together in class and at lunchtime. Susan was friendly and would chat to others in our year. Susan was very artistic.
Susan and her parents were very hospitable. I was invited to their place in Essendon on many occasions.
Later I visited the family for a long holiday in Medindie in Adelaide where Susan's father was a manager at Myers.
Every second house had a grass tennis court but we went down the street and played in the public courts in the parklands around Adelaide. Nearby was the Adelaide Oval. There was a large church on the edge of the parkland.
Later I caught up with Susan when they went to Brighton. We would usually go to the beach.
Then the hospitality came from Susan and Ian at Brighton. Susie was an excellent cook. I had years of visiting there and there were the arrivals of Matthew, Lucy and Nicholas.
Peter and I holidayed for years at Tawonga South or Bright around Easter time.
When Susan and Ian moved to Mt Beauty we would catch up with them while we were in the area.
In recent years Peter and I met up with Susan at the RAAFA Air Training Corps monthly lunches at Box Hill RSL. Ian was a member there. We would hear about the family who were widespread around the world. Eventually Susan had trouble eating but still enjoyed the company of others.
Later she still came when she couldn't talk but wrote messages. Ian filled in on her happenings at Mt Beauty and the family.
We will miss Susan as a long time friend who included us in her life and introduced us to Ian and her family.
Robyn.
